How The Internet Has Affected My Career

In this day and age, the internet can have a tremendous impact on the choices we make in life.  The information on the internet can help determine which college you will attend, the career you will choose, or even your baby’s name.  The internet opens up a whole new world to explore; and it is up to us to use it as a means, and not an end.

How has the internet affected my life?  -For one, the internet has been a primary source for information regarding my career choice to become a financial advisor.  When I was young and needed to simply get an idea of what sort of career I might be suited for, I took a career test, online.   When I had a rough idea of what career I wanted to go into; I would find a summary for the job on a website such as money.usnews.com, online.  When I wanted to know what a “day in the life” of a financial advisor was like, I would do a simple google search, online, and usually ended up on a website such as businessinsider.com. If I wanted to get accurate information on salary, job outlook, geographic statistics, or other such things, I would always go straight to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, online.

If I did not use the information on the internet to help determine my career choice, I would get a much narrower perspective.  By using the internet, I have a whole world of resources at my fingertips.

The internet will definitely impact my career development once I am out of school.  I will be expanding my professional contacts through social media sites, such as LinkedIn, and searching for jobs online.  I will probably be using the internet quite often while studying to get a CFP designation.  –I might look for the best study resources, where to get the best deals on study bundles, and maybe even find some YouTube study plans.  It is also a possibility that I will be pursuing an online Master’s degree in Finance.

Since as a financial advisor, I will be dealing a lot with investments; I will need to stay updated on the current financial economy.  In my job, it will be very important to have the most up-to-date information; which is found on the internet.  Even now, I try to become knowledgeable about finances and investments on sites such as Investopedia, or Financial Samurai.

As you can see, the internet has had a tremendous impact on my career choice; and will be playing a large role in my future career development.  I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to find such detailed job overviews, statistics, or investment information if the internet did not exist.  The internet has been an invaluable source of information, and inspiration, for my career choice and professional development.
